On a December evening, Hotel Gela transformed into a place where time stood still. The traditional “siniya” (an old Bulgarian word for a low dining table), laid close to the ground as our ancestors once dined, brought together guests from near and far for an unforgettable evening with Chef Maria Zhekova.
Guests gathered wearing warm woolen slippers (tarlatsi) around the low siniya, covered with traditional Rhodope blankets – just as generations of Rhodope people have gathered for dinner. The warmth of candles created an intimate atmosphere, while the sounds of the Rhodope bagpipe (gaida) filled the space with magic.
Each dish, masterfully prepared by Maria, came with its own story – excerpts from Nikolay Haytov’s tales, transporting guests to a time when food was not just sustenance but a shared ritual. The elegant ceramic vessels arranged on the siniya told their own tale of Rhodope lifestyle and culture.
Maria Zhekova, known for her passion for Bulgarian traditions and authentic cuisine, transformed the evening into a true culinary journey. Her approach to food – combining traditional techniques with a deep understanding of local ingredients – created a menu that was both nostalgic and exciting.
The warmth of candles, the aroma of freshly prepared dishes, the sounds of the gaida, and the moving excerpts from Haytov’s works intertwined into an unforgettable experience, reminding all present of the richness of Rhodope traditions and the importance of preserving them.
This special evening was more than just dinner – it was a journey through time, a celebration of the senses, and an encounter with the authentic Rhodope spirit that continues to live in the heart of the mountain.
