After Dimitrovden (26 October), winter steps over the threshold. According to old beliefs, from this day on the cold enters the home and dark forces lurk around the corner. And while some mark Halloween, in Gela we welcome these days the Bulgarian way: with Rhodope bagpipes, an open-air spit roast, a bonfire under the stars, and plenty of fun for young and old.
🎃 From pumpkin & watermelon → lantern
In the past, when winter drew near, people carved pumpkins and turned them into lanterns to chase away the darkness—to bring light into the home and send fear packing. We revive this ancient symbol as a bridge between the here-and-now and our roots.

Art workshops with Elitsa
- For children
We’ll paint and decorate mini pumpkins and watermelons; craft ghostly wreaths, jar lanterns, and spooky masks. - For adults
Pumpkin and watermelon carving, competition for the scariest lantern; elegant autumn wreaths from dried flowers, rose hips, and decorative gourds; “bloody” candleholders; cocktails; and décor to make even the dark look beautiful.
Games & fun for the little ones
A ghostly treasure hunt, broomstick races, spiderweb mazes, and pumpkin bowling – games inspired by our old stories, childhood fears, and childhood laughter.
Bonfire in the courtyard
Two evenings of stories by the flames, the sound of bagpipes, songs, and toasts under the stars. A bridge to a time before the hours ruled the day, when night and winter weren’t frightening, but a space for coming closer.
Food & nature
We’ll enjoy a traditional spit roast (cheverme), crisp mountain air, and the colours of autumn.
🌙 Masks aren’t required, but they’re strongly encouraged for the best mood.
